Why Cork?

Cork is a plant material derived from the bark of the cork oak (Quercus Suber), a substance that is extremely light, highly insulating and 100% natural and biodegradable.  Cork is a noble raw material. Technological development and the application of new techniques lead to infinite possibilities for using this natural and ecological resource.

The cork is first extracted from the cork oak between May and July when the tree reaches the age of between 20 and 25 years. This first cut is known as virgem[virgin]. From then on, the cork is extracted once every 9 years. The second cut is known as a secundeira, while subsequent cuts are called  Amadia. Teams of experienced, qualified artisans carefully remove the bark from each tree using axes, after which they mark its age on the trunk to keep track of the next cutting.  This work is so delicate and performed by such highly qualified craftsmen that it is considered the highest paid agricultural work in the world.

Cork can be found in the Mediterranean area, with Portugal accounting for more than 50% of global production. Other producers include Spain, Southern France, Southern Italy, Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia.
